We argue that much of the campaign rhetoric about American Muslims will subside to a political murmur. Trump now has an exhaustive plate of responsibilities that were never part of the election process. Expect his so-called Muslim policy to be promptly delegated to his homeland security team, potentially led by Rudy Giuliani. The former New York City mayor is no bigot; he has affirmed that religious tests are unconstitutional. Giuliani once suggested that Washington should tag Muslims on the terrorist watch list with a monitoring device, but the idea has its own legal issues. The real problem is the insidious view that Islamophobia is validated by the Trump ascendancy. That stance will have local, community repercussions that are far greater than any federal legislation. ■
